Interim Chancellor Philip Yeagle to Step Down on June 30

May 3, 2013

Members of the Rutgers Community:

I am writing to announce that Philip Yeagle has notified me he will be stepping down as Interim Chancellor of Rutgers-Newark, effective June 30, 2013. Please join me in thanking Phil for his service to Rutgers as Interim Chancellor and in welcoming his return as a member of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in Newark.

Prior to being appointed Interim Chancellor in December 2011, Phil served as dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in Newark, a position he held since joining Rutgers in 2007. A distinguished scholar and educator, Phil was on faculty at the University of Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and was professor and chair of the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at the University of Connecticut before coming to Rutgers-Newark.

As dean, Phil helped increase private support to the Newark College of Arts & Sciences and University College. During his tenure, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences increased its diversity, developed a new undergraduate curriculum, and added important new programs, including a Ph.D. in American Studies, pre-doctoral programs in history and philosophy, and a minor in LGBTQ Studies.

As Interim Chancellor, Phil oversaw the opening of a new Admissions Office and the creation of a new marketing program, which have led to both increased applications and record enrollments, while also raising retention rates for first-year students. In addition, during his tenure, Rutgers-Newark has risen dramatically in the US News and World Report college rankings. Phil has also overseen the planning for several major capital projects, including a new residence hall and classroom building and a new science research and teaching building.

Thanks to Phil's leadership as Interim Chancellor, we can be assured that the new Chancellor for Rutgers-Newark will find a thriving campus community that is well-positioned to embrace the exciting transformation that will accompany Rutgers University's integration with UMDNJ. The search process is going well, and I anticipate that we will be able to name a new Chancellor soon.

Please join me again in thanking Phil for his dedicated service to Rutgers.
